Screw - and - nut mechanism for operating windows comprises a screwed rod 3 engaging with a mutilated nut 5 pivoted at 7 on a bracket member 7 secured to the frame, the thread 10 of the nut being cut away so that only two or three threads on opposite sides of the nut engage with the screwed rod under the action of a spring 11. By this arrangement the nut can be pushed down against the spring to release the rod so that it can be pushed through the nut to position the window without rotating the rod.
