Purifying paraffin &c. waxes.-Apparatus for sweating paraffin or other wax comprises a closed jacketed chamber 11 divided by transverse heating cells 13 into compartments 17 that are filled with liquid wax or scale pumped through pipes 14, 15 and that are provided with air outlet and inlet pipes 20, 26. Vertical heating elements 29 hang from and are so connected to the cells 13 as to form a circuitous path through each chamber 17. Drainage is facilitated by gauze floors 18 resting on rods or other supports 19, and by gauze linings 42 and partitions 41. When the chambers 17 have been filled the pipes 20 are drained through a pipe 28, steam being passed through a pipe 22 if necessary, and air, preferably hot, necessary to prevent formation of a vacuum, is admitted through a valve 27. The water circulating in the heating elements is then gradually reduced to the temperature desired for crystallization, and after the crystals are formed the pipes 15 are cleared by passing steam through a pipe 21 and opening outlet pipe 23. Sweating is then started by gradually raising the temperature. The purified wax is finally melted out, steam from a pipe 25 being admitted to the chambers 17 if desired.
