229,104. Sutton, J. H. Feb. 29, 1924. Spigot-and-socket joints held by cement and the like. -In a spigot-and-socket joint for stoneware, &c. pipes, the pipes are positioned by spacing blocks 4 located between their ends, said blocks being less in length than the length of the socket 1 and contacting with the shoulder formed at the end thereof, so as to leave an annular space 3 between the ends of the blocks and the external end of the socket, for cement or other jointing material. The blocks 4, Fig. 5, which are preferably provided with a dovetailed portion, are adapted to fit within grooves in either the spigot or the socket end 2, 1 respectively and to project radially therefrom to support the spigot relatively to the interior of the socket in proper position. The spacing blocks preferably comprise an earthenware &c. core with an outer coating 5 of bitumen or cement, which coating may also be applied to the grooves 4 as at 6. Alternatively, the blocks are wholly formed of bitumen, cement, &c., and, instead of dove-. tailing the groove, a projection on the face of the groove, formed of bitumen, may enter a recess in the block, or vice versa.
