Wire strainers of the type having a pair of hooks pivoted to an anchored operating lever, the hooks alternately and successively engaging the links of a chain connected to the wire to be strained. The hook d that engages the underside of the chain is actuated by the movement of a weight f pivoted to the lever a and provided with a lug g engaging the hook. The upper and longer hook c is provided with a heel j to enable it to slide over the upper surface of the chain and to drop into engagement with the appropriate link.
