Gravity, materials descending by; discharging. -Apparatus for drying nuts, oil seeds, &c. by steam jackets with or without injection of steam or hot air comprises a container a through which the material descends by gravity and which is fitted with baffles or partitions b, d that cause the material to flow in thin streams, the various paths followed being substantially equal. A partition e is arranged above the outlet f to prevent direct escape of the material and equalize the flow. The discharge is controlled by a rotary or vertically-jigging table g that may be horizontal or oblique and at a variable distance below the outlet. The rotating table may be fitted with a cone m adjustable to a more or less eccentric position. In place of the partition e concentric baffles of ridge-shaped cross section may be arranged in an horizontal or descending series. If a rectangular container is employed the baffles d extend crosswise, and the ridge-shaped baffles above the longitudinal outlet extend lengthwise. The outlet may be controlled by a fixed table upon which reciprocates a scraper-bar, or the table may be rocked or joggled.
