Axle stops comprise an inclined raking element 12 terminating in positive stops 13 integral with or rigidly secured to the element 12 which may be displaced against the action of a spring 11. The element 12 comprises a pair of T-bars with webs secured to a block 9 sliding on a rod 5 pivoted to brackets 4. The spring 11 engages the block 9 and a plate 7 raised by a roller on an arm 17 actuated by a rod 21 connected to the piston of a fluid-pressure motor. The rod 5 may be of square or polygonal cross-section to prevent twisting or distortion of the element 12.
