Statistical machines. - According to the code employed, Fig. 1, the digits are represented as in Specification 207,959 by perforations &c. in one or more of four positions having the values of 1-4 and the compilation and recording of the numbers are performed by successive feeling" of the four positions. The cards or strip may be read by mechanical or pneumatic agency, but in the arrangement shown in Fig. 3a the reading is performed electrically, a contact finger b1 being drawn across the card or in the case of a strip A a series of four contact fingers a2 being disposed obliquely across the strip. The four circuits cooperating with the finger or fingers each include an electromagnet c1 - - c4 adapted when energized to lower a pawl e1 - - e4 through one, two, three or four steps and turn a ratchet wheel e to a corresponding extent. Geared with this wheel are a type-wheel to print the digit and a totalizing wheel F bearing type and also contacts arranged in accordance with the code. The intermediate gearing may provide for alternate trains to permit addition or subtraction at will and by disconnecting this gearing and applying a contact bar f2 to the drum F the total may be recorded by the type-wheel and also if desired punched at D. This punching mechanism may also be used to reproduce the values on the cards or strip. Transfer may be provided for by the addition of a magnet co and multiplication and division may be performed by repeated breaking of the circuit to effect successive additions and subtractions. For cash-registering purposes two drums F may be geared with wheel e for addition and subtraction respectively.
