Improvements in and relating to stop motions and clutch mechanism for calculating apparatus, machines for automatically compiling, recording and reckoning statistics, and like machines
149,285. Lasker, W. W. May 1, 1918, [Convention date]. Operating by motor; statistical machines.-A clutch and control device for use with motor - driven calculating-machines but specially adapted for use with machines for compiling statistics from perforated record cards as described in Specification 126,308, comprises a member with radial arms mounted on the driving-shaft, a slidable member mounted on the driven shaft, means for coupling and uncoupling the said members, and means associated therewith for stopping the motor when the operation of the machine is arrested. The electric motor drives a shaft 392, Fig. 1, and through worm gearing rotates a shaft 394 provided with a clutch member 400 having radial arms adapted to be engaged by a clutch pin 409 slidable in a bracket 404 fixed to a shaft 402 on which is mounted a wheel 445 gearing with a wheel 446 on the main operating cam-shaft 59 of the machine. The clutch pin 409 is provided with a pinion 420 which is adapted to engage a rack lever 418 to hold the pin out of engagement with the member 400. The rack lever is rocked downwardly to allow the clutch pin to slide by the action of its spring 414 into the operative position by means of a push-rod 436, Fig. 2, which is attached to a lever 426 having a forked part engaging a pin on the rack lever. A latch 432 attached by a link to the lever 426 normally holds the rack lever in its raised position, and a latch 440 engaging the tail end of the rack lever holds the said lever in its disengaged position. Flexible connexions 448, 479, in operative relation with the receptacle for the record cards which have been analyzed, and with the magazine which contains the cards respectively as described in the above-mentioned Specification, are provided, and so arranged that when the receptacle is full or the magazine empty, the latch 440 is released to allow the rack lever 418 to rise to engage the pinion 420 and thereby withdraw the clutch pin 409. The motor is stopped by means of the flexible connexion 485 which communicates with an extension 491 on the rack lever 418 and the motorcircuit-switch latch 492.
