Treatment preliminary to tanning. - The chemical disintegration, puring or balting of fish skins prior to tanning is effected by means of enzymes obtained from the glands of' fish such as sharks. Convenient sources of the enzymes are the gland situated at the commencement of the intestine and corresponding to the pancreas of land mammals, the extract of the fluid gall which contains lipases, or the urine. Extracts from these sources may be used in combination.
