Crown corks, applying. - Crown corks " for a capping-machine are removed from a hopper a by a brass or other non-magnetic band, tape &c. c to which they are .caused to adhere by magnets f, g, h, having common polepieces being arranged to provide a long narrow magnetic field, the strength of which decreases with its distance from the hopper a. If the crowns are not in alignment with a discharge shoot i, they are returned to the hopper by projections p adjacent the upper part of the band, if the decreasing magnetic force has not previously allowed them to fall back there. The projections p also engage the edges of the crowns and when the crown faces inwards guide it to a shoot q adapted to return it to the hopper a. The conveyer band moves rapidly to ensure a constant succession of crowns at the mouth of the shoot i, the rearmost acting to press forward those in the shoot and keep it full. The magnets may be permanent magnets, electromagnets, or wire coils.
