Retractors; gagging- appliances.-An instrument for use as a gag, retractor, &c., particularly for insertion in the mouth, comprises pivoted members a, b having bearers d at one end and handles e at the other, the extent of opening between the bearers being regulated by a toothed segment g on the member a engaged by a pinion f held in any position by a spring-pressed pawl h. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the pinion f is held in position by a spring-pressed rod k which is manipulated by the operator's finger in the loop-shaped end i of the member b.
