Manufacture of an anti-serum for prevention or treatment of scarlet-fever

Bacteria, cultivating; antitoxins, toxins, and immunizing and like serums.-Anti-serums are obtained from rod-like bacilli which are stated to be found in cases of scarlet fever but which differ from the usual scarlet fever hµmolytic streptococci. The cultural and morphological characteristics, which resemble those of the diptheria bacillus, are described. Modified forms of the bacilli, found in the blood of patients suffering from various complications following scarlet fever, may be used. For the production of anti-serums, animals such as cows or horses are injected with suspensions of the bacilli grown on solid media, or with cultures in liquid media, or with both; or injections may be made with mixtures of the normal bacillus with its modified forms, or with scarlet fever streptococci, or both, or with other species of bacteria or their toxins found in scarlet fever patients, or instance stophylococci and proteus bacilli. Mixed cultures or mixtures of separate cultures may be used, or successive injections may be made. The bacilli may be grown in media containing carotin, on ordinary agar covered with a layer of blood into which the bacilli are inoculated superficially, in media containing lipoids, in beef broth containing 2 per cent of peptone, or on L÷fflers serum. Toxins are produced in broth cultures but not when solid media are used.
