286,257. Bemberg Akt.-Ges., J. P. March 1, 1927, [Convention date]. Waterproofing; proofing-compositions. - Artificial silk is waterproofed by treatment with an aluminium soap dissolved in an organic solvent, the soap containing at most twice the equivalent weight of fatty acid to three times the equivalent weight of aluminium. In an example, a solution in water of S per cent of grained soap having a fatty acid content of 80 per cent is poured into an excess of a concentrated solution of a basic aluminium sulphate having 1.2 hydroxyl groups to three atomic equivalents of aluminium. The soap is converted into an insoluble basic aluminium soap having a content of 9.6 per cent of Al2O3. Two kilograms of this soap are dissolved in 100 kilograms of trichlorethylene, and 4 kilograms of artificial silk are treated with the solution, warm, for a quarter of an hour. The solvent is then evaporated off. In another example, an aqueous solution of 8 per cent of cocoa butter soap having a fatty acid content of 84 per cent is poured into an excess of basic aluminium sulphate containing 1.5 hydroxyl groups to three atomic equivalents of aluminium. The resulting soap contains 11.6 per cent of Al2O3. 250 grams of this soap are dissolved in 20 kilograms of trichlorethylene, and the fabric treated as before. In a third example, the aqueous soap solution as in the first example is added to a concentrated solution of a basic aluminium sulphate containing one hydroxyl group to three atomic equivalents of aluminium. The aluminium soap thus produced contains 8.8 per cent of Al2O3. 750 grams of this soap are dissolved, with 3 kilograms of paraffin wax, in 100 litres of benzol, and used as before. Substances such as solid or liquid hydrocarbons, fats, fatty acids, paraffins or waxes, soluble in organic solvent, may be added to the aluminium soap.
