Improvements in and relating to cutters for recessing the gudgeon-pin holes of pistons

Drilling - machines ; cutters.-In a device for recessing the interior of the gudgeon pin holes in reciprocating-engine pistons for the purpose of receiving a spring ring to hold the gudgeon pin in position, a cutter a formed from sheet metal has a projecting tooth b and an eccentric rectangular hole c. A mandrel d provided with an operating handle e has a tapered stem f of rectangular section, and in use is passed through the hole in the cutter and into the interior of the hollow gudgeon pin g, pressure on the handle causing the cutting tooth b to be forced radially outwards so as to cut a recess h on rotation of the mandrel. A collar j secured by a set screw on the gudgeon pin secures the latter in position during cutting. The device may be used in an old piston where the gudgeon pin holes have become enlarged and the pin has been shortened.
