310,103. Frenchs, Ltd., Hawes, A. B., Horton, R. W., and Mayo, F. C. C. Jan. 30, 1928. Addition to 270,806. Attaching hinge members to articles adjustably.-The construction according to the parent Specification is provided with means to prevent further collapsing or telescoping of the parts of the case after they have been adjusted in position for a given bulk of contents. Fig. 1 shows a hasp fastening equipped with one form of the device. A slide 14, pressed outwardly by a spring 15, is disposed between the main slide 14 and one side of the socket member 5. A roller 10 disposed between stops 11, 12, fixed to the socket-part 5 and lying between the main slide and the bevelled end 5b of the supplementary slide acts as a one-way clutch preventing further telescoping of the parts. A lever 17 is pivoted to the socket member at 17b, and has the end 17a adapted to engage a pin 16 on the slide 14. By pulling the projecting end or finger-pipeces 17c of this lever towards the open end of the socket member the bevelled part 5b of the slide 14 is withdrawn from contact with theroller 10 and leaves the main slide free to operate as in the prior construction. Figs. 3, 4 show an alternative construction of the device applied to one of the hinge members. The clutch is provided by a roller 10a disposed between the slide and socket members and extending into an inclined recess 4t in the slide and into an oppositely inclined recess 11a in a rod 11 slidable within the slide 4. Appropriate movement of the rod with respect to the part 4 either permits the inclines 4t and 11a to act in opposite) directions to force the roller into gripping contact with the socket member 5 (Fig. 3) or leaves the roller free to rotate allowing the slide member to move freely in either direction (Fig. 4). The rod 11 is maintained in roller-gripping position by a spring 12, and can be held inoperative by means of a spring catch 13 releasable by a button 14 projecting through the side of the socket member. The catch is brought automatically into operation when the cover of the suit case is turned about its hinge ; this is effected by a cam surface 8c provided on the hinge fitting engaging a projecting portion 11b on the sliding rod causing it to move inwardly until the catch 13 snaps into a recess 11c formed in the rod.
