Grates. - A forceddraught furnace grate comprises reciprocating T-shaped firebars A extending the whole. length of the grate and a detachable plate C which extends across the bottoms of the bars so as to form therewith closed compartments D for the supply of forced draught. The plate C is formed with rows of perforations c adapted to register at intervals with recesses cut in the sides of a bar E which is reciprocated by the mechanism actuating the bars A. The latter are moved independently in one direction by cams B1 on a shaft B and simultaneously in the other direction by the engagement of a cross-member G, connecting the two outer bars, with a second cross-bar G1 secured to the intermediate bars. The shaft B may be driven from the shaft b1 by chains b or by an eccentric and pawl and ratchet gearing.
