Openers, cleaners, &c.-Compound eccentrics, the throw of which can be varied by relative rotation of the inner and outer eccentrics while the machine is in operation, are used to impart vibration to pulp strainers of the rotary drum or other type or to paper or rag-dust screening apparatus or to other machines employed in the - manufacture of paper. The inner member a' of the eccentric is formed in one with a hollow shaft a. Spiral slots e, e1, Fig. 5, are formed in the inner member a1 and in the outer member d of the eccentric, and a radial stud, carried by a rod b which extends through the shaft a, projects through the inner slot e into the outer slot e1. Longitudinal motion of the rod b by means of a hand-wheel c1 thus adjusts simultaneously the throws of eccentrics at either end of the shaft a. Fig. 4 shows apparatus in which the eccentrics at either end of a strainer are each adjusted by means of a short rod b', the rods b1 being moved equal distances longitudinally but in an opposite direction by means of levers h actuated by blocks g2 moved by the screw-threaded ends of a shaft g, which extends the length of the strainer and which can be turned in bearings g1 by a handle c'.
