Producers .-Water gas or a mixture of water gas and distillation gas is obtained by bringing powdered fuel into contact with superheated steam, the heat of the gases generated being recovered for use in the process. Steam is heated in a superheater 1 and delivered to a reaction chamber 2 with powdered coal from a feeding device 11, the gases generated passing through a dust separator 5, heat exchanger 3, and wet dust separator 4 supplied with water for conversion into steam which is delivered by a pump 10 through the heat exchanger 3 to the superheater 1. The surplus gas passes by a pipe 6 to a scrubber 7. The hot flue gases from the superheater 1 may be passed through a waste heat boiler 8 or through a heater 9 for preheating the air of combustion and heating gas. The steam from the boiler 8 may be used to drive the fan 10 and for injecting powdered coal into the reaction chamber 2, but the coal may be injected by compressed water gas. The apparatus may be operated continuously by duplicating the chambers 1 and 2.
