Electrolytic cells, arrangements of; vapour and vacuum or low-pressure apparatus, arrangements of. - A high-tension direct current is obtained from terminals P, P1 by connecting in series on the output side a plurality of rectifiers A‹, A1, A2, A-1, A-2 the input terminals of which are connected to the same alternating-current source K, K1, blocking condensers C1, C2, C-1, C-2 being interposed between the A.C. source and those rectifiers at a higher potential than that of the supply source. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the rectifiers A2, A-2 at highest potentials are supplied through two condensers in series, whilst in the arrangement shown in Fig. 2 only one condenser is provided on each side of all the rectifiers except A‹ which is connected directly to the supply terminals K, K1. In arrangements in which condensers are employed in each rectifying unit to obtain from each unit voltages equal to twice the supply voltage, each unit may be connected on the condenser side directly to the A.C. source, blocking condensers being provided only on the rectifier side of the unit as shown in Fig. 5. The rectifying units may comprise electrolytic, mercury, or thermionic valves.
