Gases, treating with steam.-Gases are treated prior to the electrostatic deposition of dust with steam produced by adding water to the products of combustion of a gas flame. Water is fed from nozzles 8 into the burnt gas from a burner 4, to which air is supplied through apertures 7. The steam produced passes into the gas duct 1 leading to the electrostatic dust separator, while unvaporized water collects in a receptacle 12 and is re-circulated to the nozzles 8. Purified gas or the gas under treatment may be burnt in the burner 4, which has a branch 15 leading some of the burnt gas into the electrostatic separator for flushing the insulators. Alternatively, a gas flame may burn within the mass of water to be evaporated, the water being supplied from a subsidiary cooler.
