Carding-engines; openers &c.-A clothing for the cylinders or rollers of textile preparing machines for carding, combing, opening, cleaning or breaking fibrous materials, is constituted by a single wire formed at intervals with integral teeth and pressed into a single helical groove cut in the surface of the cylinder or roller or wound helically over the cylinder surface so that the circles of action described by the individual teeth are independent and are spaced apart at equal intervals, the pitch of the teeth along the wire being not less than three times the pitch of the rows of teeth round the cylinder. The wire constituting the clothing is shown in Fig. 2, the teeth a, b, c corresponding to the teeth a, b, c in the roller development, Fig. 1. The four teeth x1 - - x4 nearest to any point x on the roller surface are each on a different coil and are disposed substantially in the form of a square or rhombus. The tooth-groupings described in Specification 271,556 may be used.
