Silk-dressing machines; carding - engines; combing-machines; heckling- machines; openers, &c.- A toothed member or cylinder which can be used in the combing, carding, opening, dressing, &c., of fibrous material is constructed to yield about its axis when it meets with undue resistance due to a tangle &c. in the fibre being operated upon. The device is described as applied to a silk-dressing machine of the Brenier-Neyret type. The tufts 6, Fig. 1, of silk inserted in the clamps 4 on the slowly rotating cylinder 3 are subjected to a preliminary treatment by a series of combing-cylinders 22 mounted on the driven frame 16. The cylinders 22 are mounted in split bearings 26, 28, Fig. 5, held together by an adjustable spring 33, so that, in the event of undue resistance, the spindle of the cylinder will rotate in its bearing. The cylinder may be built up in sections 42, Fig. 3, on a fixed shaft 40. The sections are loose on the shaft and are pressed against friction surfaces 51 carried by collars 48 keyed to slide along the shaft. Springs 53 press the parts together. The sections are pressed against a thrust ball bearing 46, and are secured by a collar 55. Each section has a rounded flange 62 to prevent the entry of lint as far as possible. The yielding of the seetions on the shaft 40 may be governed by spiral springs attached to the sections and to the collars keyed on the shaft. After the preliminary treatment, the tufts are treated by the rigidly mounted cylinders 12, 13. The cylinders 22 are cleaned by the brush 35 which transfers the waste to the cylinder 13 on which it is consolidated by the brush 38. The cylinders 12 and 13 may be arranged as yielding cylinders. The cylinders 22 mav be mounted on endless chains instead of the rotating frame 16.
