In operation, the needle is inserted into the fabric at 20 when loop 21 slides up the incline 3 or 29 and down the incline 4 or 30, to withdraw the latch by engaging the shoulder 16 or 31. The hook 10 then engages the thread 22. As the needle is then pulled upwards, the latch is released by the loop 21 and closes the hook, which pulls the thread 22 through the loop 21. The needle is then pushed down to pick up the next loop in the same manner.
