345,294. Pumps. TINKLER, A., 18, Langham Street, Walton, Liverpool. Dec. 13, 1929, No. 38191. [Class 102 (i).] A pump for operating steering- gear comprises six radial cylinders formed in two sets of three, the cylinders of one set 32, 32a, 32b being rigidly connected together and those of the other set 32c, 32d, 32e being also rigidly connected together, whilst both sets can rotate slightly in the fixed pump casing 31 to an extent limited by fixed nozzles 29, 29a against which the cylinders 32c, 32b are normally pressed by a spring 40. Plungers 33, 33a .. 33e are reciprocated in the cylinders by springs 33f and a cam or eccentric 35 rotated by the hand-wheel 34. Non-return valves 37, 38 are provided in the plungers and cylinders respectively, and all the cylinders of each set are connected together by pipes 42 or 42a. When the hand-wheel is rotated liquid is pumped from the interior space of the casing into passages 39 at the outer ends of the cylinders and the pipes 42, 42a. If the handwheel is rotated in a clockwise direction (say) the cam 35 has a torque effect on the two sets of cylinders, tending to rotate them in the same direction and so pressing cylinder 32b more firmly against nozzle 29a while lessening the pressure of cylinder 32c against nozzle 29. Thus the liquid pumped into the pipe 42 passes through the nozzle 29a and pipe 28a into cylinder 27a, forcing plunger 26 to the left, the pressure in pipe 42a and nozzle 29 re-acting on the cylinder 32c so as to move it slightly away from the nozzle and allow liquid to escape from cylinder 27 through pipe 28 and nozzle 29 into the casing 31. If the hand-wheel is rotated counterclockwise the conditions are reversed and the plunger 26 is moved to the right.
