[Class 38 (iii).] Varying electromotive force; field control.-The field of a motor or of a Ward-Leonard generator supplying it is provided with a damper winding so that for starting, reversing, or braking, field control is effected by a simple switch, e.g. a push-button switch which changes the exciting current in one step between maximum and minimum values, the damper winding causing the actual field to change gradually.
