371,765. Emergency steering-gear for ships. VADSET, J. G., 26, Dronningensgate, Stavanger, Norway. Oct. 28, 1931, No. 29863. Convention date, Feb. 23. [Class 114.] Emergency steering-gear for ships comprise, a pair of towed open semicylindrical plates 1, Fig. 7, connected to the bow of the ship by lines 30 and to the quarter by lines 31, 32. As shown the lines 32 are connected up to the usual steering-gear and by adjusting their relative lengths the respective inclination of the plates 1 is varied and the vessel so steered. Alternatively the lines 30 may be connected to the steering-gear or the lines 31, 32 may be bridled and continued as a common line to the steering- gear. More than one pair of plates may be employed. The construction of the plate is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and comprises a semicylindrical body 1 lined with planks 2 and stiffened by posts 3. The plates are fitted at one end with a top inclined plank 24 and a forwardly-inclined semicylindrical plate 28 to increase the steering effect whilst depth is maintained by the bottom inclined plate 8.
