404,956. Protecting diamond tooledges. WINTER, W., 58, Osterstrasse, Hamburg, Germany. July 14, 1932, No. 19986. [Classes 61 (ii) and 124.] A device for setting diamond &c., hard tools in a lathe &c., and for protecting the cutting edges thereof when not in use or during setting, comprises a cover f, Figs. 3 and 4, fitting accurately over the clamping plate d for the cutter a and secured thereto by a screw g. A plate i of steel, celluloid or other material is attached to the cover by screws h and has a front edge k which is a copy of the cutting edges of the diamond &c., a to an enlarged scale. An aperture m in the plate accommodates the diamond to protect it laterally and a further cover plate, not shown, may be arranged over the recess to give protection from above. A pointed screw n in the cover forms a stop to set the plate in relation to the cutter. A microscope o, Fig. 7, may be attached to the holder f to view the cutter a, the plate i being mounted thereon by means of a bracket r and having graduations t inclined at angles of 1‹ ... 5‹ to its front edge. Crosswires s are provided in the microscope and a circular scale on the outside thereof co-operates with a fixed pointer. An additional protector x, Fig. 8, may be angularly adjustable on the cover f by means of a slot w and screw u, an opening z being provided to view the cutter a and the outer edge y being directed downwardly and laterally parallel to the edge of the plate i. Alternatively, the plate i may be omitted in this form. In another form, a slotted bar or ruler may be attached to the outer edge of the plate i by means of a screw and slot so as to be adjustable angularly and laterally thereon. In the case of a tool-holder b1, Fig. 12, of circular cross-section, the cover f1 is cylindrical and has the plate i attached thereto by screws i5. An aperture m1 enables the cutter a to be seen and a pin g1 prevents rotation of the cover on the holder. A plate of mica is placed over the plate i to protect the cutter from injury through the sight aperture m1.
