451,997. Oil engines; valve mechanism; cylinders &c. KNUDSEN, C. H., 325, 60th Street, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A. Nov. 29, 1935, No. 33197. Convention date, May 18. [Classes 7 (ii), 7 (iii), and 7 (vi)] In a two-stroke oil engine provided with piston - controlled exhaust ports 15 and scavenging ports 16, the former are further controlled by a ring valve 22 which closes the exhaust before the scavenging ports are closed by the piston. Fig. 1 shows an engine with two rows of radial cylinders with the valves 22 actuated by a pair of cams 25, 25a on the crank-shaft, and rods 26 sliding in guides and connected to rocker arms 30 fitted at their pivots 29 with torsional springs for returning the valves. Each cylinder is composed of a crank-case portion 10 enlarged and threaded at 12 to receive an outer portion 13 having a combustion chamber 14a shaped as shown. The cylinders are provided with air jackets 19 formed with cooling-fins. Fig. 5 shows an opposed-cylinder engine of similar construction, the ring valves 39 being actuated by spring-pressed rods 40 bearing on rockers 44 engaging cams 47. The crank-case portion is closed by plates 54, 54a, and the scavenging chambers are formed by plates 53, 53a. This type of engine may be used in the wing structures of aeroplanes.
