Hydrogenation catalysts are prepared by passing the vapour of a metallo-organic compound over a metallic support heated to such a temperature that the catalytic metal is deposited on the support. Nickel, cobalt, and iron carbonyls and lead tetramethyl are mentioned as suitable compounds. The support may be in the form of rolls of gauze or concentric wire coils arranged in a metallic tube. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also a method in which a superficially oxidized metallic support is coated with a paste of nickel hydroxide, to which small quantities of catalysts such as silver, vanadium, cobalt and cadmium have been added. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
