[Class 120 (i)] In apparatus for electrically controlling the feed or delivery of cotton &c. in preliminary opening machines, an electric switch A, Fig. 1, is mounted upon or actuated by the rocking shaft of the regulator door C of a hopper opener and is arranged to control two alternative circuits according to the position of the door C. In a system, Fig. 3, comprising a bale opener E, hopper opener F, porcupine opener G, single vertical opener H, gridded dust trunks J, cage exhaust K, hopper feeder Land scutcher M, the two-way mercury switch A is fixed to the pivoted shaft of the swing door C and has three flexible leads a, a1, a2 secured to a terminal block a3 to which a three cord flex a4 is attached terminating in a three pin block a5. A switch m operated by the drop lever m1 of the scutcher M and a mercury switch l operated by the swing door l1 of the hopper-feeder L are also provided to complete the circuits of two solenoids f, e used respectively for operating clutch levers on the hopper opener F and the strap fork on the bale opener E. When the hopper opener F has a sufficiency of cotton, direct connection is made to the solenoid e, Fig. 5, to stop the feed to the bale opener E. When the opener F has an insuthciency of cotton the solenoids e, f are controlled by the switches l, m, Fig. 6.
