Openers.-Wool, hair, cotton, or other fibrous material receives a preliminary opening and cleaning treatment on an endless conveyer, by which it is carried, preferably in a direction slanting upwards, under adjustable comb teeth p mounted on a frame m, of which one end is pivoted and the other end reciprocated transversely of the conveyer by means of a cam s, or the whole frame may be reciprocated. Dirt &c. separated from the fibre falls through the conveyer, and is diverted by a roof-like structure u into trough-like receptacles v provided with other conveyers w. The main conveyer consists of a series of transverse laths g attached to ropes f, which may extend straight along the conveyer, as shown in Fig. 3, or may be inclined or follow a sinuous path. As shown in Fig. 1, the teeth may be placed closer to the conveyer at the upper end than at the lower end.
