[Class 59] [Also in Group V] Cassava roots are crushed without substantial pulverization by repeated pressure treatment between pairs of rollers, the rollers of each pair having equal-peripheral velocities. Between each pair of rollers is a combing device for the fibrous mass of cassava. In the form shown, the rollers 3 have stripping knives 5, and between the pairs of rollers are feeding devices 4 having rotating rollers with pins which co-operate with other pins on the sloping walls to act as a combing device. The rollers are so adjusted that the roots pass through a series of interspaces of successively decreasing widths. If desired the apparatus may be divided into halves by a partition at right angles to the axis of the rollers, one half of each roller having a slightly reduced diameter, the roots being passed down first at one side and then at the other side of the partition.
