[Class 75 (i)] [Also in Group XXIX] In an oxyacetylene welding or cutting apparatus the passage of one of the gases to the burner nozzle reduces the pressure on one side of the diaphragm of a " sensitive demand regulator " to less than atmospheric pressure and the diaphragm is operated by the atmospheric pressure on its other side to open a valve to allow the passage of the other gas to the burner nozzle. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 the passage of the oxygen from the cylinder A through a ventilator tube C to the burner nozzle D produces at the oxygen jet C* a subatmospheric pressure which is communicated through the oxygen supply pipe to the left side of the diaphragm 14 of the sensitive demand regulator F. The diaphragm 14 consequently moves to the left and operates levers 22 to move a headed pin 21 against the resistance of a spring 23 to allow a valve 19 to lift from a small valve opening 18 and oxygen to pass to the burner nozzle. The oxygen and acetylene supply pipes may be fitted with fine adjustment control devices B consisting of inner and outer stepped bodies 5, 6, the inner body having a gas passage 7 controlled by a pin 9 on a plate 8 guided by a steady pin 10 and adjusted against the resistance of springs by a nut 12 on a spindle 11.
