575,695. Storing and supplying water under gas pressure. SOUTHERN, J. Jan. 20, 1944, No. 1136. [Class 68 (i)] [Also in Group XXVIII] In water supply and distribution systems comprising a tank in which the water is under an artificial head created by air pressure, a float sensitive to the water level in the tank is adapted to operate either an air-admission valve or an air outlet valve according to the rise or fall of the water level in the tank to maintain an appropriate ratio of air to water in the tank. A tank A is supplied with water by a pump E driven by a motor D controlled by a switch C operated by the pressure in the tank, the switch being also hand-controllable. A chamber 10 is fixed over an opening in the tank and supports a spindle 12 to which are fixed the counterbalanced arm 13 of a float arranged in the tank, a pointer 12c indicating the position of the float, and a cam arm 12a which, at the upper and lower limits of its movement, operates respectively an air admission valve 15 and an air release valve 16. The valve 15 may be connected by a line I to the suction of the pump E which then, with the water, delivers atmospheric air to the tank. A rubber or like sleeve 17 is provided around the float spindle 12 to prevent escape of air past the spindle from the tank. The ball of the float is positioned centrally in the tank so as to be unaffected by changes of angle when on board ship:
