[Class 79 (iii)] [Also in Group XXV] In a motor vehicle, the bonnet is arranged to open upwardly and guide means are provided for a rearward portion thereof, the rear portions are restrained laterally and damage to the body panels is avoided. The guide means may extend longitudinally and be slightly inclined upwardly towards the front end so that in conjunction with a parallel link type of hinge connected to the bonnet intermediate its ends, the opening movement of the bonnet is substantially vertical and accelerates towards the fully opened position. Fig. 3 shows the bonnet 16 (rear end only) closed, and Fig. 4 open, the hinge and guide member shown being duplicated at each side of the bonnet. The body member 24 carries a pair of brackets 28 between which are pivoted three similar bottom arms 29 and two interleaved similar upper arms 37, the outer ends of the two sets of arms 29, 37 are pivoted to a lever 38, the upper end of which is connected to a pair of brackets 43 bolted to a channel member 42 secured transversely of the bonnet. An abutment 45 on the upper arm 37 limits the opening movement. A tension spring 31 counterbalances the weight of the bonnet. The sides of the rear end 21 of the bonnet are restrained laterally and guided by means of a roller 52 carried by the bracket 46 secured to the bonnet and which engages in the guide member 64 secured to the body member 68.
