PICT:0603113/III/1 An apparatus, for determining if and to what extent the air of exhalation of a person contains carbon monoxide, comprises a differential thermometer C serving as a carbon monoxide indicator, a catalyst, e.g. hopcalite capable of effecting the combustion of carbon monoxide and enclosing one bulb of the thermometer, a pump D and a valve F, the thermometer, pump and valve being interconnected by a conduit L forming a circulatory system permitting the pump to draw the air to be examined into the system and to discharge it therefrom as well as to circulate fresh air within the system. The circulatory system may be provided with devices B and A respectively for removing carbon dioxide and moisture from the air to be examined, and an air flow meter E. The thermometer at its lower end may have a widened diameter, the widening extending higher in that shank, the bulb of which is enclosed by the catalyst.
