摘要
A starch conversion syrup free from bitterness is made by the acid hydrolysis at superatmospheric steam pressure, e.g. steam at 30-50 lb./sq. in., of an aqueous suspension of starch, e.g. a 20-24 DEG Be. suspension of maize starch, in the presence of not less than 0.5 per cent. based on the dry weight of the starch, of activated carbon of vegetable origin which will pass a 200 mesh screen to a product in which the ratio of total reducing sugars, calculated as dextrose, is 56-60 per cent. of the total solids of the liquid. The pH of the liquid is preferably adjusted to 4.2-4.4, preliminarily to removal of the activated carbon, concentration, decolourizing by carbon, and further concentration. Specification 509,710 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the employment of active carbonaceous material of vegetable origin in any quantity and of any degree of fineness. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
