614,363. Boot-making machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. July 12, 1946. No. 20844. Convention date, July 14, 1945. [Class 17 (i)] Putting shoes on lasts.-A machine with a driven friction tool and a last-support mounted on a treadle-operated carrier, by which an operator can bring the bottom of a shoe on a last on its support into engagement with the tool, is adapted to urge a shoe further on a last and, to facilitate manipulation of the shoe relatively to the tool, the support is pivotally mounted for movement about an axis approximately parallel to the lengthwise axis of the shoe bottom at the part engageable with the tool. It may also be pivoted about an axis perpendicular to the general plane of the shoe bottom through the centre forepart. The invention is described in relation to a machine generally similar to that described in Specification 406,335 and wherein a shoe S, Fig. 1, to be forced on a last L is supported on a block 24 mounted on a rod 98 in the upper end of a treadle-operated lever 68 so as to be movable against a rubber belt 20, which, on contacting a continuously driven roll 32, moves the shoe bottom relatively to the last L. In the form shown, the last support, comprising a last pin 22 and a block 24, is mounted on the carrier provided by an arm 68 and the pin 22 is engaged in a thimble in the last L. The rod 98 on the upper end of which the block 24 is pivotally supported for movement round an axis parallel to the longitudinal axis at the side of the centre support is vertically adjustable in the upper and of the lever 68. The block 24 is also pivotally mounted on a pin 112 in an extension 110 from the sleeve 106 by which the block is pivotally mounted on the rod 98, the axis of the pin 112 passing through the centre forepart of the sole and at right angles to it. The top of the forepart of the last L engages an abutment formed by a leather pad in the base of a channelshaped portion on the face of the carrier 24, the opposite sides of the top forepart of the last engaging the side walls 28 of the channel portion to prevent rotation of the last L on its pin 22. An upright pin is provided on the machine frame, and on this the last may be supported while the shoe is being adjusted on the last before transfer to the last pin 22. In a modification, for use where the type of shoe is such that it can best be operated on with the last in broken or collapsed condition, the last pin 132, Fig. 5, extends upwardly from a block 130 mounted on an extension 110 in manner similar to the block 24 but at a greater inclination. A pair of ears 134 extending from the block 130 and engaging the upper portion of the cone of the last rearward of the pin prevents rotation of the last L1 on its pin.
