PICT:0645159/IV (a)/1 PICT:0645159/IV (a)/2 Continuous filaments, preferably of nylon or polymethylene terephthalate, have portions removed from them according to a predetermined cycle while moving continuously forward. Preferably the portions are removed by cutting, but abrasive means may be employed. The resultant filaments may be cut to form tapered bristles for paint or other brushes. In an example, two parallel filaments 1 of polyhexamethylene adipamide drawn to a diameter of 0.012 inch, are passed between feed and nip rolls 2, 4 and beneath an eccentrically mounted supporting roll 3, with which the filaments have contact under tension. A cutting wheel 5 having three equally spaced teeth 6 at its periphery is rotated in juxtaposition to the supporting roll 3. The filaments resulting from the operation are cut into bristles DX, DY. If desired, cutting may take place at X and Y only and the bristles may be bent at D. Specifications 535,263, 578,079, 578,324 and 590,451 are referred to.
