In safety devices for colliery and like cages of the kind comprising a suspension member fast on the hoisting cable and movably coupled to the cage, and a plurality of cams on the cage coupled tu the hoisting cable and normally retained out of engagement with the usual guide ropes by the downward pull of the cage with respect to the suspension member, the cams are arranged in geared pairs so that rotation of one cam of a pair causes the other cam of the pair to rotate in the opposite direction and the guide rope to be gripped more firmly between them. The suspension member) 1 is fast on the cable 2 and supports the cage 4 by flexible members 5. Rods 6 depending from the member 1 pass through eyes 7 on the cage and have a pin-and-slot connection with an arm 10 on a shaft 11 mounted on the bottom of the cage. Cams 13 at the end of each shaft 11 are coupled by means of gearing to opposed cams 14. Arms 16 on the shafts 11 are connected by springs 17.
