A box adapted to fit over and close the top of the grate of an open fireplace has an air-admitting aperture arranged to provide a downdraught through the fire. A closed metal box 6 of sufficient size to hold an adequate charge of fuel has a slidably removable bottom 7. At the lower edges of the side walls, the box 6 has laterally adjustable wings 8 which abut the side walls of the fireplace. An apron 9 completely closes the front of the fireplace and supports the box 6 above the bottom of the back boiler. An air-admitting aperture 10, which is uncovered on removal of the sliding bottom 7, is above the level of the boiler flue so that a downdraught is produced. For use in a grate without a back boiler, side ducts 13, Fig. 6, are provided extending below the bottom of the box 6. The ducts 13 may also extend above the top of the box to reduce the possibility of a short circuit between the ducts, and one or both of the ducts may have draught control dampers. The air inlet 10 is provided with control means for use when the bottom 7 is completely removed. An additional charge of fuel for the fire may be brought in the box 6, which has a handle at the front, the box placed in position and the bottom 7 withdrawn so that the fuel can fall into the grate as the previous charge is consumed.
