[Class 38 (iv)] In an internal-combustion engineelectric vehicle or ship drive in which the fuel supply to the engine and the excitation of the generator are automatically controlled by an engine-driven governor, the coritrol is such that within a low range of engine speeds only the generator excitation is controlled by the governor, whilst over a higher speed range the governor controls only the fuel supply. In both ranges each position of the fuel valve or generator field regulator, as the case may be, corresponds with a given position of the governor. The ranges may be contiguous, overlapping, or spaced by an intermediate range in which neither the ruel valve nor field regulator is affected by the governor. A still lower fuel valve is again controlled by the governor. Over-riding controls for restricting fuel supply in dependence upon supercharge pressure and for increasing fuel supply when starting, may also be provided. As shown in Fig. 1, an engine 1, having fuel pumps 8 controlled by a common link 9, drives a governor 12 and a generator 2, 6 with an associated exciter 3. A field regulator 7 controls the excitation of the generator, which supplies traction motors 4. Control of the link 9 and of the regulator 7 is by a link 21 moved about an upper pivot by the governor sleeve 13 through linkage 16, 17 which is also acted upon by a fluid-pressure servomotor 18-20. Movement of link 21 to the left from its mean position 21a actuates the fuel control link 9 over rods 22, 23 and spring coupling 35, whilst movement of link 21 to the other side of its mean position operates field regulator 7 through rods 24, 25. A dashpot may delay return movement of rod 24. Rods 22, 24 are biassed towards link 21 by springs 31, 33 respectively, but are prevented from following the link past its central position by stops 32, 34. Adjustment of the stops permits overlapping or spacing of the two speed ranges. A stop 41 carried by a bellows 39 subjected to the pressure in the supercharger 11 prevents excessive fuel intake if this pressure is low. Means may be provided for releasing stop 32 at the lowest speed range to enable the governor to regain control of the fuel control link 9. This stop may also be released electrically to admit a greater supply of fuel for starting.
