697,443. Electric supply systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 19, 1952 [Feb. 27, 1951], No. 4386/52. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (iv). In a system for stabilizing the operation of a long-power transmission line, as described in Specification 653,859, the valve-controlled shunt reactors are normally inoperative and, under fault conditions, a solenoid-operated rheostat responsive to low voltage at the sending station is arranged to increase the excitation of the generator feeding the line so there is ample voltage available for re-synchronizing upon clearance of the fault. On clearance, the rheostat slowly restores (under dash-pot control) excitation to normal, the reactors becoming effective to limit line voltage if this tends to rise above normal.
