[Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] In a control system for a synchronous motor fed by an alternator, such as in a ship propulsion system, as described in the parent Specification, a first movement of a control member in one direction from a neutral position sets a directional switch for forward rotation of the motor, a similar movement in the other direction from neutral position sets the directional switch for reverse rotation of the motor, a second movement of the controller in either direction closes the motor and alternator armature circuit, whilst a final movement of the control member in either direction accelerates the prime-mover driving the alternator. Movements intermediate of the second and final, in either direction, may bring about the subsequent operations associated with starting and accelerating the motor described in the parent Specification. Fig. 1 shows the modifications necessary to adapt the controller described in that Specification for use in the present invention. The control wheel A operates a transverse shaft B which is capable of movement away from a neutral position in one direction only and which, by rotation, effects all the starting and accelerating operations other than the selection of the directional switch 16-18, which is controlled in dependence upon the initial direction of rotation of the wheel A through pin, fork and lever mechanism 13-15 operated through bevels 10, 11 driven by a shaft ASP2/SP directly geared with the wheel A. In order that the shaft B may rotate in the same direction irrespective of the rotational direction of the wheel A, a shaft 23 directly driving shaft B is arranged to be driven by shaft ASP2/SP either directly through a dog clutch 24, 25, or indirectly through a differential 19-22, this dog clutch and another, 30, 31, for locking the carrier 21 of the differential, being selectively actuated from the lever 15 through links 26, 28, 32. In a modified arrangement, the shaft B is driven by either of two shafts carrying loose pinions oppositely rotated by the control wheel A and selectively clutched to their shafts by a cam operated by direction-controlling lever 14.
