700,128. Cleaning abrasive discs. BUDD CO. July 25, 1951 [July 29, 1950], No. 17615/51. Class 60 The abrasive surfaces of discs or belts are cleaned by blowing live wet steam under pressure against the fouled surface for such a short time that no deleterious wetting of the surface takes place. The abrasive surface is preferably moving at high speed. An abrasive disc D is pressed into contact with motor driven rotating face plate 13, e.g. at 1,750 r.p.m., by head 33, which is freely rotatable in mounting member 14, while steam is injected at 115 p.s.i. through nozzle 18, so that fouling and moisture are thrown off by centrifugal force. The member 14 is retractable by a pneumatic piston which causes the treated disc to jump off spindle 34 and roll to a collection basket. Head 33 is braked in the fully retracted position by segment 38 to enable a further disc D to be placed on central spindle 34, and the retraction of member 14 automatically cuts off the steam supply to nozzle 18. Water may be supplied to or removed from the steam as desired.
