Class 100 (2) An address plate 1 comprises a strip of paper, or other flexible material suited to receive characters to be provided thereon through the intermediary of a typewriter ribbon or carbon paper and to duplicate the characters after they have been moistened, the strip 1 having its leading edge provided with one pair only of fingers 2 made from a more rigid material, the fingers protruding on either side of the strip substantially in line with the leading edge. The fingers may be constituted by a metal pin accommodated in the leading edge of the plate by folding the edge over and glueing it to the strip. The plate is used in a machine comprising a drum 4 rotatable about a shaft 3 and carrying projections 5 for engaging the protruding fingers of the plate. The plates are fed to the cylinder between guide rails 6, retained on the cylinder by guides 8, and taken off by means of guide rails 14. Envelopes 11, to be addressed, are first moistened by a moistener 12, fed between the roller 4 carrying a plate and an impression cylinder 9, and finally discharged on to a table 13.
