713,510. Perambulator brakes. BENNETT, H., and EMPSALL, W. A. July 16, 1953 [July 16, 1952], No. 17925/52. Class 103(1) In braking means for perambulators and like vehicles of the kind having two overlapping or off-set wheels at each side, one or a pair of brake members, disposed transversely of the perambulator chassis, is or are adapted for displacement by hand or foot-operable control means whereby the, or each, brake member makes, or is removed from, braking contact with all four road wheels of the perambulator. A perambulator body 10 is supported by spring chassis members 11 which are fitted with axles 12 having wheels 13, 13 and 14, 14. Midway between axles 12 is a transverse component 15 formed with a flattened portion 15a at each end for connection with the chassis members 11. Rigidly secured to each portion 15a and passing through an aperture in each member 11 is a sleeve 16 wherein is slidable a guide rod 17 secured at its upper end to a transverse brake bar 18 which is fitted at its cranked ends with rubber sleeves 19. Helical compression springs 20 normally maintain the ends 19 of the brake bar 18 clear of the wheels 13 and 14. The brake is actuated by means of a flexible wire type cable 21 and operated by a brake lever 24, secured to the handle 10a of the perambulator as shown in Fig. 3, which, when moved in the direction of the arrow, allows a spring- influenced catch member 24d to engage a notch 24f. This action moves the transverse brake lever 18 downwardly against the resistance of springs 20 into braking contact with the adjacent two wheels 13, 14 whereby all four wheels are locked to prevent movement. Other controlling means (other than of flexible wire type) may be utilized to bring a brake bar or bars to operative and inoperative positions; either by hand or foot operation as desired. The Provisional Specification describes alternative braking arrangements if the wheels are in running alignment.
