[Also in Group XL(a)] In a coal gas manufacturing plant a chamber 21 provided with an explosion head 22 which is moved or ruptured when an explosion occurs, is located immediately before an electrostatic precipitator 13. When the head 22 shown is ruptured, the gas is vented to the atmosphere through a spring or weight loaded valve 24. In another embodiment, the head is moved to actuate a tripping device for cutting out the electricity supply and also to operate a bye-pass connection 14. The chamber 21 includes a baffle 25 and apertured diaphragms 26 for mixing the supplied gases. A gas sample may be led from the chamber to a device which cuts out the electricity supply if the oxygen content of the gas becomes too high for safety.
