Yarn collected in the container of a centrifugal twisting unit is doffed by inserting a bobbin into the container, trapping the yarn extending between a reciprocating guide and the container wall by means attached to the bobbin, a sleeve or the spindle, severing the yarn near the point of entrapment and causing the container to cease rotating so that the yarn mass collapses on to the bobbin. The bobbin 10 is carried by a flange 15 of a sleeve 12 which rests upon a dead spindle 13 carried on a rail 14 that is rotatable to tilt the bobbin 10. On the upper end of sleeve 12 is arranged an annulus 16 extending beyond the rim of the flange 15 so that when the bobbin 10 is raised into the container 1 it overlaps and embraces the end of the yarn guide 6 when the latter is fully withdrawn. In this position, the span 9 of yarn rotating with the container 1 is entrapped within a slot 17 and held there by an elastic band until the span 9 is severed by contact with a serrated edge 19. When the container 1 comes to rest, the mass 11 of yarn collapses upon the bobbin 10. Rotation of the container 1 is recommenced as the bobbin 10 is lowered and by tilting the bobbin after clearing the container, the yarn extending from the guide 6 is severed by contact with the bottom edge of the container 1. When the bobbin 10 is removed from the sleeve 12, it has an end leading from the interior of the yarn mass for piecing. This is obtained by winding a few turns of yarn above the main mass in the container.
