A Fottinger-type coupling comprises an impeller 2 and a runner 14 in an outer shell 19 fixed to the impeller, an inner shell 32 mounted to be freely rotatable and surrounding the impeller and runner and serving when braked to empty the working chamber, and a scoop inside the casing 19 which may be braked to fill the working chamber. The inner shell 32 contains a wall 33 adjacent the runner and forming a passage 34 controlled by check valves 36 through which the working chamber is emptied on applying a brake 39 to retard the rotation of the shell 32. The outer shell 19 forms a reservoir 22 containing a scoop comprising conical discs 23, 24 and radial vanes 29. Liquid is removed from the reservoir by the scoop on applying a brake 30, and is transferred through a passage 41 and inlet ports 42 to the working chamber. Vanes 43 formed in the housing 19 assist the action of the scoop. Specification 744,568 is referred to.
